Help Haiti Heal

Archmere Academy students are committed to the recovery efforts in Haiti.  Our students raised $3,200 as a result of a Tag Day (relaxed dress code) on January 29.  This is more than three times the usual amount raised during Tag Days.  Of the $3,200 raised, $2000 has been sent to the Delaware Medical Relief Team so that participating doctors and nurses could purchase supplies for their trip to Haiti.  The French Club is selling roses to also raise money for Haiti.

In other efforts to help, the F
rench Club, under the guidance of Mme. Douglas, stuffed Zip-lock bags filled with hygiene and first aid items to be sent to Haiti through the United Methodist Church Relief Supply Depot.  Archmere also held a Help Haiti Heal Pasta Dinner on Saturday, March 13 in the Student Life Center.  One hundred ninety people attended the dinner and $5,000 was raised ($1,000 will be sent to the Art Creation Foundation for Children in Haiti, which provides a safe, nurturing community for former street orphans; $1,000 will be sent to The Benjamin Josephson Foundation, which sends health care workers to Haiti on an ongoing basis; and the remaining $3,000 will be sent to partner with a catholic school trying to rebuild in Haiti - the committee is currently in the process of researching schools).  Gov. Jack Markell stopped by the event and spoke briefly to the guests.  Michelle Rollins (past parent of Monique ’98, Michael ’00 and Marc ’01) also attended and supported the event.  During the dinner there was student entertainment along with the opportunity to purchase raffle items and a silent auction.   Thank you to everyone who came out in support of the event.

A special thank you to our donors!

On the Road to Gold - Archmere Seniors Named as Semifinalists for U.S. Physics Team

Seniors Patrick Walsh and Nick Yannacone have been named Semifinalists for the 2010 U.S. Physics Olympics Team.  On February 25, 2010, the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) announced the top students chosen to advance to the Semifinal round of U.S. Physics Team selection.  Approximately 3,200 students participated in this first phase of the selection process, the Fnet=ma exam, in January.

About the International Physics Olympiad:  AAPT began the program in 1986 to promote and demonstrate academic excellence. The International Physics Olympiad (IPHO) is a nine-day competition among pre-university students from more than 80 nations. The 2010 Olympiad will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, from July 17-25.

U.S. Physics Team Selection:  AAPT is responsible for recruiting, selecting and training the U.S. Physics Team each year to compete in the IPHO Competition. This selection process begins in early January when high schools register their students to participate in the Fnet=ma exam. Approximately 300 top scorers on this first test will advance to the Semifinal round of competition.

A second exam is used as the basis for selection of the 24 members of the U.S. Physics Team. In May, these students will travel from schools all over the United States, to the University of Maryland-College Park to the U.S. Physics Team Training Camp. There, they engage in nine days of intense studying, mystery lab, daily exams, and problem solving.

At the end of that training camp, five students and an alternate will be selected as the "Traveling Team" to represent the United States at the IPhO. In July, the Traveling Team and their coaches will attend a three day Mini Camp of intense laboratory work before moving on to the IPhO.

Archmere Academy Students Candidates for The United States Presidential Scholars Program

Archmere Academy seniors Alison Celello, Nora Crawford, Patrick Walsh and Nicholas Yannacone were selected as candidates for The United States Presidential Scholars Program.

Students have the opportunity to become Presidential Scholars based on two paths of accomplishments.  The majority of the Scholars are selected on the basis of broad academic achievement.  Approximately twenty additional students are selected on the basis of their academic and artistic scholarship in the visual arts, the performing arts or creative writing.

Eligible students are U.S. citizens graduating or receiving a diploma between January and August of the current program year, and students who have taken the SAT or ACT Assessment on or before the proceeding October.  Students meeting these requirements are automatically considered for participation.  Initial inclusion in the pool of eligible candidates is determined by the information provided by the student on his/her SAT or ACT test registration.

Of the 3,000 candidates, approximately 500 candidates are named semifinalists, and their names and supporting materials are forwarded to the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars for further review.  In April, the Commission reviews the applications for all semifinalists, selecting up to 121 Academic Scholars and up to 20 Arts Scholars.  All scholars are honored for their accomplishments during the program’s national recognition events, held in June in Washington, D.C.

Students Win Honors in WordMasters Challenge

Two teams of students representing Archmere Academy recently won high honors in this year’s WordMasters Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of many different kinds of prose and poetry.  Participating with 526 other school teams from all across the country, the school’s 11th graders tied for 7th place in the nation in the year’s first meet, held in October.  At the same time, the school’s 12th graders placed 1st in the nation.  The teams were supervised by Stephen Klinge.

Several of the school’s students won honors for individual achievement as well: Junior Michael McGurk was one of only two 11th graders in the entire country to earn a perfect score in the meet, while seniors Christine Wehner, Nick Yannacone, and Eleanor Guerin, each of whom made only one mistake, all placed among the 26 highest-scoring 12th graders nationwide.  Seniors Alison Celello, Emily Fortunato, Dorothy Scharr, Patrick Walsh, and Nora Crawford placed among the 110 highest-scoring 12th graders at the same time.  More than 52,000 students from across the country participated in the meet.

The premise behind the WordMasters Challenge is that attentive reading and sensitivity to language are among the most important skills students acquire in school.  The texts students must analyze for the Challenge can range from short fiction to poetry.  The texts for this meet were a short story by Michael McLaverty, paired with a poem by Anthony Thwaite (for 9th and 10th graders), and a poem by Thomas Hardy paired with a Shakespeare sonnet (for 11th and 12th graders).  The students will participate in three more WordMasters meets during the coming months, and medals and certificates will be awarded in June to those who have achieved and/or progressed the most in the course of the year.

Welcome New Students and Families
Archmere welcomed new students and families on Wednesday, 8/26 during New Student Orientation and the New Family BBQ.

During New Student Orientation, Archmere seniors greeted the freshmen as they arrived at 9 AM.  Freshmen received an Archmere wrist band, lanyard and drawstring tote bag as part of their welcome.   They convened to the Theater where Headmaster Father McLaughlin gave the opening prayer and welcome, followed by Counselor Marcy Aitken with the Pledge of Allegiance and remarks from Principal Dr. Doyle.  Seniors on the Orientation Committee and Student Council Officers were then introduced.  Campus Minister Mike Johnson and English teacher Brian Manelski coordinated a humorous skit by the seniors.  Following the skit, the seniors met their freshman buddy and participated in small group activities.  After the activities, the seniors took their freshman buddy on a campus tour following the freshman’s “A day” schedule.  After the tour, they reconvened in the Theater.  The students were divided into three groups for three activities: tug of war, karaoke and human scavenger hunt.  The groups rotated so all students participated in each activity.  The program concluded with lunch in the Student Life Center (SLC) and seniors assisting their freshman buddy with operating their lock for their locker.

The New Family BBQ took place in the SLC from 5:30-7:30 PM.  New families mingled with current parents and faculty/staff of Archmere.  The BBQ was catered by Sage, the new dining service of Archmere.  Thank you to the Admissions and Guidance departments for hosting the event.

Leadership Training - August 14, 2009
On Friday August 14, 90 student leaders were on campus to participate in a formal leadership skills development program conducted by “Learning to Lead” located in Kennett Square, PA.  Participants included seniors that have volunteered to be freshman advisor group leaders, officers of clubs and organizations, student council/class officers, and captains/co-captains of athletic teams.  Through physical challenges and group activities, our leaders learned the importance of clear communication, building a strong foundation, working together instead of competing and relying on team cohesiveness to reach a goal.  Comments from students included, “Finding out more about myself was the most valuable part”, “I learned that teamwork and communication are key”, and “It made me realize what qualities are really needed to build a solid foundation.”
