Archmere Rugby Wins Tyler Brown Memorial Cup and Back to Back Championships

Four years ago, not many students and faculty knew much about rugby at Archmere. After consecutive years of increased expectations, and last year's National Title, it is clear to say that the sport has made its mark. Last weekend, Archmere claimed victory over Salesianum in the seven-on-a-side (7s) state title. After another championship win over Salesianum last night, the Archmere rugby team can now add 15s State Champions and Tyler Brown Memorial Cup winners to their banner. Delaware’s first rugby 15s state high school championship, played at Alapocas field, was not only a state championship match but also a night to remember and honor Salesianum rugby player Tyler Brown, who lost his life this year.

The News Journal writes of last night's match: Archmere Academy prevailed 20-5 over Salesianum School in the type of bruising tussle that is typical for the sport. There were cuts, bruises and grass stains galore.

Scoring tries for the Auks were Tanner McIlrath '16, Danny Bark '18, Noah Niumataiwalu '16 and Nick Udovich '16. Sophomore Danny Bark was named title game MVP of the night. Danny stated of the match: We have a strong group. Sallies played a tough game but we got great leadership from our captains [Niumataiwalu and Udovich]. It was a rough game but we came out on top.

Next Saturday the Auks' rugby team will once again play at Alapocas field in the Subaru 7's, which they also won last year. Over 40 teams, youth to college level, from all over the east coast, will be present for this regional match.
