Art Teacher's Halloween Costume Provides a Teaching Moment

For art teacher, Mr. Terry Newitt, dressing up for Halloween is more than a fun tradition. For the past 20 years, Terry has used his costume as a teaching moment. Every year he dresses as Elwood Blues, of the Blues Brothers.

Yesterday afternoon, he sent an email to his students that read:

Art Students,
Mr. Newitt has called in sick and will not be in school today. His substitute is Elwood Blues, one of the Blues Brothers.

Please be mindful of Elwood. He’s a nice guy, but he knows absolutely nothing about art and will probably just try and show you Blues Brothers movies all period. Don’t let him do this. You need to work on your projects.

Also, since it was the last minute, Elwood had to drive all the way from Chicago, an all-nighter, and he will be very tired. He ran out of gas in Claymont but walked the rest of the way to Archmere. If he asks you for a cigarette, don’t give him one.

We ask you, as a “community service project”, to try and educate Elwood about art, since he is not at all aware of how important it is.

Thanks, so much! And Happy Halloween!

"The students get really into it," says Mr. Newitt. "They start to teach 'Elwood' about drawing techniques and concepts we are covering in class. They walk him through the vision behind their projects and show off their latest work." Aside from having a great class, they also get a kick out of Mr. Newitt's new "look" - complete with hat, sunglasses, suit and briefcase.
