Caroline Rath '13 Named Big 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week

Sophomore back Caroline Rath has been named the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. It is the second time in three weeks that the Defensive Player of the Week has been a Buckeye –goalkeeper Liz Tamburro won the award on Sept. 8. Last week, Peanut Johnson was the Offensive Player of the Week.
Rath played a key role – both offensively and defensively – in two Buckeye wins last weekend. On Friday against Michigan State, she scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 triumph over the Spartans and also added a defensive save. Rath and the rest of the Ohio State defense held Michigan State scoreless for the final 57:34 of the contest.

Less than 48 hours later against Ohio, Rath assisted on a penalty corner goal by Emma Royce that tied the score at 2-2 four and a half minutes into the second half. Ohio State would go on to win the game, 3-2, thanks in large part to a defense that gave up just one shot in the second half and held the Bobcats scoreless for 41:05.

Keyed by Rath, along with Tamburro, Carolina Vergroesen, Hannah Pany and Royce, the Buckeye defense is allowing just 9.6 shots and 1.57 goals per game. In the Big Ten, the unit is ranked second in goals allowed (11), third in in goals-against average (1.57) and tied for first in shutouts (two).

Ohio State, winners of four straight, is back in action tomorrow when it travels to Oxford to take on Miami University at 5 p.m.
