Gabby Penna '20, Reid Hartman '19 Announce Tournament to Support Gift of Life

On Tuesday, March 4th, Gabby Penna '20 and Reid Hartman '19 spoke at Archmere's student assembly about their newly formed Auks Support Life Club. At the end of last year, Gabby and Reid started the club with the main goal of providing support to the Gift of Life Organization. As of this past summer, they have clubs established at seven other Delaware High Schools, created to raise awareness about the importance of organ donor registration.

During the assembly, special guests Ms. Colleen Duran, Volunteer Coordinator at the Gift of Life Donor Program, and Ms. Wanda Griffiths, heart recipient and Volunteer Ambassador with Gift of Life, spoke to the Archmere students. They educated the students on the Gift of Life Donor Program, which is the nation's leading organ procurement organization, coordinating more organ and tissue donors than anywhere else in the United States. Serving more than 11.2 million people across the eastern half of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, they help to coordinate the recovery and distribution of organs and tissues used in life-saving and life-enhancing transplants.

Gabby and Reid began their club last year with the intention to raise funds to offset the costs of organ transplantation & family support services, while also bringing the Delaware Community together. Each April, Gift of Life hosts a Donor Dash in celebration of the life-saving power of organ and tissue donation and to honor the donors who make it possible. For this year's Donor Dash, Gabby and Reid are orchestrating one big team of student participants from Archmere, Charter School of Wilmington, Padua, Salesianum, Sanford, Tatnall, Ursuline, and Wilmington Friends on Team Penna. In order to secure bus transportation for all the involved schools, they are hosting a basketball tournament to raise money.

The basketball tournament will be held at Salesianum on March 30th with time to be determined. The eight schools will all be participating in the tournament, and each will be able to submit 3 teams of 5 to 7 players.

The Gift of Life Donor Dash is on April 14th. Come join our Auks in the 3k walk which is a unique opportunity for donor families, recipient families, those waiting for an organ, and community supporters to walk together in unity. Registration details for Team Penna are available today on the Gift of Life website.
