Monthly College Counseling Update: May 2019

College Counseling
End of Year Programs

It’s been a wonderfully hectic post Spring Break in College Counseling, commencing on May 1st with our College Decision Day celebration (see photo). Last week we hosted the College Admission After School Workshops for juniors and sophomores. Almost fifty students participated in two classroom sessions. Students had the option of attending sessions entitled College Fit, Early Action/Early Decision, and Supplemental Essays. Admission guests from Syracuse, Colgate, Lynn, Muhlenberg, Lehigh, and Fairfield were kind enough to share their wisdom with our students.

Later that evening about 25 Archmere families attended the Wilmington Case Studies program at Salesianum where they participated in a mock-admission committee exercise with admission representatives from around the country and attended a mini-college fair. Sophomores were also given their Naviance in May and Freshman participated in a college admission activity known as The GPA Game in late April.

This week we will be coordinating a meeting of college counselors at Villanova University and were fortunate enough to convince John Mahoney of Boston College and Michael Gaynor from Villanova to speak about their recent changes to an Early Decision admission option. Villanova made the move three years ago and BC will make the change this year.

Moving on to the Underclassmen...

Last week we emailed rising juniors and seniors a checklist of recommended summer actions to best prepare them for their upcoming college search and application process. Parents also received their own to-do checklist. As a reminder, the College Counseling Office is open during the summer months to answer questions and assist students and families. For rising sophomore and junior families that are eager (or anxious) about the college search journey we’re offering optional and informal meetings with College Counseling in June and July and also welcome phone calls and emails.

Summer Plans

College Counseling will be spending the early summer months evaluating programming, setting the 2019 - ’20 academic calendar of events, attending professional development opportunities, visiting schools, and hopefully recharging our batteries as we recommend everyone do.

Have a wonderful summer!
