Joseph R. Biden ‘61 Becomes First Auk Elected as President of the United States

Archmere Academy cultivates empathetic leaders who are prepared for every good work, and now the first alumnus of the school has been elected to this country’s highest office. Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. ‘61 has been elected the 46th President of the United States of America.

Biden’s leadership began during his formative teenage years at Archmere Academy where he was elected President of his Junior and Senior Class and was a homeroom representative. Classmates of Joe Biden will tell you that he had aspirations then of becoming President of the United States.

In 2013 when then-Vice President Biden visited Archmere Academy, he spoke to the student body and said “the priests here at Archmere gave me the confidence to speak,” as public speaking was a large part of the curriculum at the time, and played a large role in President-elect Biden working through his stutter

Now, Joe Biden makes history as the first Delawarean elected as President, as well as the first Archmere Auk.

Biden served as the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017 and represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate from 1973 to 2009. Three of Biden’s children attended Archmere, Hunter ‘88, Ashley ‘99, and the late Joseph R. (Beau) Biden III ‘87.
