Field Hockey Defeats Sussex Academy, Moves on to State Semifinals

It wasn't until almost halftime that the Archmere field hockey team started their scoring brigade against No. 12 Sussex Academy in the Quarterfinals of the State Tournament. The game, held at home on the lower turf on Saturday November 12, was a defensive battle until just before the half. The first goal came when Maura Read '25 wound up for a shot, and on its way toward Sussex Academy goalkeeper, Emma Gioffre '23 was able to get a piece of it with her stick. The ball sailed high, and with just 13 seconds left until the break, the Auks finally broke through.
While the Auks’ offense was pressuring the Seahawks relentlessly, the Archmere defense was just as solid for most of the afternoon, preventing Sussex Academy from getting much going in the first half. That continued into the second half, when an early interception precipitated the second goal by Maura Read '25, assisted by a long drive from Bella Dell’Oso '23.

In the third quarter, the Seahawks earned four penalty corners in less than two minutes, forcing Auks goalkeeper Ava Hughes '24 to make a high save on the last one. Sussex Academy added two more corners later in the third, again getting the ball on net, but Ava Hughes held strong. Shortly after that, Emma Gioffre carried the ball upfield and fed Bella Dell’Oso, who deposited the ball into the back of the net. With 6:24 remaining, Emma added a second goal off a penalty corner with the assist from Becca Olsen '23.

Archmere had a 28-10 shot advantage, while the Seahawks had 10 penalty corners to nine for the Auks. Goalie Ava Hughes made seven saves. The Auks improved to 14-2. Archmere will meet No. 3 Tatnall on Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium at the University of Delaware. Tickets can only be purchased in advance at https://gofan.co/app/school/DIAA
