Football Heads to State Semifinals

At the quarterfinal State Tournament football game at Abessinio Stadium on November 26, the Archmere football team turned up the defense, earning a shutout in a 13-0 victory over Howard. The Auks controlled the ball and controlled the clock, allowing Howard just three second-half possessions. It made all the difference in a 13-0 victory. The win sends the Auks to a semifinal showdown at top-seeded Caravel on Friday night.
A defensive battle in the first half, both teams went into halftime scoreless. Archmere finally broke through in the third quarter after forcing the Wildcats to punt from deep in their own territory. Cole Fenice '24 picked up 13 yards on third down, and on the next play, quarterback Chris Albero '23 faked a handoff and took off over right tackle, cutting outside and going untouched into the end zone with 4:49 remaining in the quarter. The extra point was no good, so the lead was 6-0. After an interception by Dom Anerino '23, the Auks added some insurance with another run by Cole Fenice, upping the score to 13-0.

Cole Fenice ran 18 times for 126 yards, and he also caught 3 passes for 37 yards. He had 10 tackles on defense, and both of his punts were downed inside the 20. Chris Albero rushed for 54 yards and threw for 97. Aidan Bellew '23 and P.J. Blessington '24 each had 6 tackles.

The semifinal game will be at 7:00pm on Friday, December 2nd at Caravel Academy. Tickets must be purchased in advance on the Go Fan website.
