Monthly College Counseling Update: June 2018

Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

As May 1 approached in the College Counseling Office we asked seniors to list the mascot and nicknames of the college they were attending on our office graffiti board. Our Auks will be future Gauchos and Garnet, Cardinal and Orange, Crimson Tide, Flyers, Spartans, and even a Fighting Engineer! Like the classes before them, they will always be bound together as Auks.

The Class of 2018 is full of explorers, with many confident to set their own course. This year’s graduates will be attending colleges in 28 different states and an equal number, twenty-eight, are enrolling at schools that no other Archmere graduate presently attends. Both of these numbers are the highest in recent history. And at a time when the average undergraduate student in the United States travels 107 miles from home to attend college, these Auks, traveling to places such as Knoxville and New Orleans, Shanghai and Seattle, as well as South Bend and St. Andrews, will enroll at universities an average of 462 miles from Archmere. The 135 members of the Class of 2018 will matriculate at 70 different colleges and universities. Rewards and recognitions have come their way as well, 10 will be enrolling in honors programs; and as a group they have been rightfully and collectively recognized by colleges, universities and outside groups with over $24 million in Scholarships and Grants.

We are thrilled to see these Auks fly, thankful for the privilege to be a small part of their journey, and excited to see what their futures hold. Congratulations on your incredible academic accomplishments and we wish you the best of luck making the most of the college educations you’ve worked so hard to have the ability to take advantage of. Congratulations!

Summer Schedule

The College Counseling Office is staffed the entire summer. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. The months of June and July will be spent assessing, setting our calendar and curriculum for 2018-’19, visiting schools and attending professional development opportunities. In August, we will begin meeting with seniors and hosting essay, application, and interview programs.

The Class of 2019 and 2020 and their parents received a recommended checklist of things to complete over the summer. Our number one recommendation for students is to be productive and explore. This exploration could be driven by an interest in a career, activity, or subject area and can take many forms. We’ve discussed in several settings the value of summer conversations, career interest shadowing, summer programs, employment, volunteering, and other immersion opportunities. A productive summer can also include college visits!

Have a wonderful summer!
