Stephanie Silverman Awarded Grant for Innovative Design Thinking STEAM Curriculum

Art Department Chair Stephanie Silverman '00 NBCT was awarded the 2021 Dr. Martin Rayala Grant from the National Art Education Association's (NAEA) Design Issues Group (DIG) for an original curricular unit. The DIG Dr. Martin Rayala Grant Awards recognize dedicated NAEA Art and Design Educators for developing, implementing, and documenting insightful design-thinking learning challenges. Titled Juxtapositions & Biomimicry—Trans-Disciplinary Design Learning from Concept to Completion, Silverman's interdisciplinary unit incorporates both National Core Art Standards and NextGen Science Standards into design learning challenges, while leveraging new and emerging technologies. The unit is designed to teach students to systematically investigate connections between science, art, and design, and develop cognitive skills and behaviors to imagine and construct prototypes of real-world solutions. Silverman will be piloting her interdisciplinary design unit this spring semester with her Archmere Academy Introduction to Design & Junior Portfolio Design students. Silverman is beginning her EdD (doctoral program) in Curriculum & Instruction at Indiana University this spring.
