Auks Earn Highest Award in Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts who change the world by tackling an issue that is important to them earn the Girl Scout Gold Award. It takes making the world a better place to a new level. Maggie Dempsey ’21 and Kaitlyn Kaulback ’22 each drove lasting change in her community and earned this highest award.
Kaitlyn from Troop 4191 is passionate about marine biology. She aspires to solve water pollution and climate change issues so marine life can continue to thrive. To earn her Gold Award, she started a beach and street clean-up in Brigantine, NJ, with teen volunteers in the area. Because of her efforts, less micro-plastic will end up in the ocean and bay.
Maggie from Troop 492 realized that she had the power to make a difference at the beginning of the pandemic. Masks were difficult to come by. She took charge and not only made masks for others—she also taught sewing classes over Zoom so her friends could learn this new skill to help others as well. “It took a lot of patience. I definitely have a lot more admiration for all the teachers teaching over Zoom last year,” said Maggie.
