Archmere Academy Celebrates Student Who Earned a Rare “Perfect” Score on Advanced Placement Exam

Archmere Academy celebrates 2021 graduate Margaret Atkins for earning a perfect score on a college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Exam, taken last spring. Margaret is currently in her first year at Dartmouth College, majoring in Engineering and minoring in Visual Art.
Margaret not only received the top score of 5, but was also one of only 152 students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP 2-D Art and Design Exam, receiving the maximum score on each portion of the exam. This outstanding accomplishment is a direct reflection of the top-quality education being offered at Archmere Academy.

“AP courses and exams are college-level, requiring great focus and persistence among participating students,” said Trevor Packer, head of the Advanced Placement Program. “We applaud the educators who encourage students to challenge themselves, who motivate and encourage diverse students to achieve their academic potential.”

During her time at Archmere, Margaret was a two-time American Visions Nominee for the state of Delaware. She was recognized as one of the Top 5 Works of Art in the entire state, twice, and in 2021 won more Scholastic Art Awards (12) than any student at Archmere, across categories of art and design including Architecture & Engineering, Painting, Drawing & Illustration, Digital Art, and Portfolio. In addition, in the spring of 2020, Margaret utilized her talent as an opportunity to help her community. She assembled and programmed a 3D printer to print Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) components for face shields for health care workers in New York City during the early days of the pandemic.

Archmere Academy Art Department Chair and Art Teacher, Stephanie Silverman '00, taught Margaret and stated, “Regardless of her accolades and achievements, Margaret always viewed each assignment in AP Studio as an opportunity to push beyond her edge and continue to acquire and blend new skills and explore novel ideas. Her choice to major in Engineering and minor in Visual Arts at Dartmouth demonstrates her enthusiastic passion for disciplines often segregated, and speaks to the span of her abilities and intellectual interests. I am thrilled and proud, but not at all surprised that Margaret was recognized with a perfect AP Studio Art exam score."

The Advanced Placement Program is committed to ensuring that students have access to the opportunities they have earned. Students who succeed in AP are not only more likely to succeed in college, but have the chance to save a significant amount of time and money by earning college credit or placement.
