Archmere Academy Continues Global Studies Program, Introduces Global Studies Diploma

After a two-year postponement due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Global Studies Program, introduced in the fall of 2019, announces two important developments: travel abroad with students in 2023 to Spain and to Belize, and the introduction of Archmere’s Global Studies Diploma.

First, in September of 2022, the Spanish program at Archmere will host students from Chamberis Maristas, a Catholic high school in Spain, after which, in the spring of 2023, Archmere Spanish students will travel to Madrid to visit Chamberis Maristas. This will be our first international trip in four years: the last time Archmere traveled abroad was in June 2019 when Madame Thiel and Madame Cooper visited France with their students. The Global Studies Program committee has also approved a science-based, culturally rich trip to Belize, also in the spring of 2023, led by science teachers Mrs. Davidson-Wolf and Mr. Bellace. Archmere will schedule international trips for a variety of purposes–for instance, cultural, academic, spiritual, and service–so that students can experience, among other things, the benefits of discovering and engaging in the global community.

In fact, this is the program’s mission: Archmere Academy’s Global Studies Program prepares lifelong learners for every good work by building cultural competence and by fostering personal growth and professional success through travel and study. This multidisciplinary academic program provides cross-cultural, experiential learning opportunities that cultivate empathetic leadership, effective communication, and a global mindset.

Introducing the Global Studies Diploma

The Global Studies Program is also introducing the Global Studies Diploma, designed to encourage Archmere students to witness and understand the wider world. Starting in the 2022-23 school year, students interested in earning this special diploma would need to meet criteria in five different categories: Speak, Study, Act, Travel, and Share: for example, high achievement in World Language and other department courses that support and teach a global mindset; participation in clubs or activities that work toward world community-building; international travel with an Archmere group; and the creation and presentation of a capstone project that captures the knowledge and insights they have gained as a result of their work toward the Global Studies Diploma.

Archmere’s Global Studies Program aims to encourage students to recognize and understand our global interconnectedness by engaging in the world around them through a variety of opportunities in curriculum, travel, and activities. Archmere students will learn of the Global Studies Diploma during course registration for the 2022-23 school year, beginning at the end of April. Expect more details in the near future from Tim Dougherty, Global Studies Coordinator.
