Archmere Welcomes Students From Madrid, Spain

The Department of World Languages and Cultures began the next cycle of Archmere's Spanish Exchange Program this month. We welcomed 10 students from our new partner school in the heart of Madrid, Spain. Chamberí Maristas is a K-12 Catholic school in the Chamberí neighborhood of central Madrid. Two teachers accompanied the 10 students, who were matched with and hosted by Archmere families in their homes for two and a half weeks.
During their stay in Delaware, the students enjoyed trips to the beach or shore, NYC, or various other locations over Labor Day weekend. They also enjoyed trips to Philadelphia to visit Penn/University City, the Barnes Museum, Shake Shack and various city landmarks with Mme. Thiel and to Old City, Reading Terminal Market and Rittenhouse Square with Srta. Scheflen, and to Washington D.C. to visit various landmarks and the Museum of the American Indian with Mr. Dougherty and Ms. Poletti. During their stay they accompanied their hosting students to classes and on a traditional hayride with a smores bonfire at Linvilla Orchards and a farewell bowling party at Bowlerama hosted by the Ross family.

The Spanish Exchange program is comprised of a 2-year cycle in which Archmere students host the Spanish students, and then travel to visit their Spanish counterparts in Spain during Spring Break of 2023. The reciprocity of this program not only reinforces the learning opportunities for our students and the larger Archmere community, but also enhances and strengthens the relationship between the students themselves. In April, 15 Archmere students will be accompanied by Srta. Scheflen and Sra. Pérez to stay with their former guests at their homes in Madrid and attend classes at Chamberí. They will also explore the city of Madrid, including world class museums such as the Prado and the Reina Sofia, and visit nearby cities like Toledo. The students will be in Spain during part of Holy Week, so will also experience the religious processions/traditions.

On behalf of the World Languages and Cultures Department, we would like to thank all of the host families for opening their homes and their hearts to our Spanish visitors.
