Vincent J. Filliben Mid Atlantic Turkey Shootout

The second annual Vincent J. Filliben Mid Atlantic Turkey Shootout took place over Thanksgiving break on the Archmere campus. The tournament, named after legendary Archmere teacher, athlete, coach and Hall of Fame member Mr. Vince Filliben, featured 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams from Delaware and Pennsylvania. When he retired as boys basketball coach at Archmere Academy in 1985, nobody in Delaware had guided his team to more victories than Vince Filliben, whose Auks won 378 games from 1954-85. The tournament was organized by 1998 Archmere graduate and Assistant Athletic Director, Mr. Nick Sanna.
After a successful inaugural Vince Filliben Turkey shootout last year, the tournament was back in full force in 2022 at the Moglia Fieldhouse. Archmere Academy played host to eight teams competing in the 2002 renewal of the tournament. The 1st round featured 7th and 8th grade boys teams from Delaware (St. Edmond’s, St. John’s, and St. Mary Magdalen) squaring off against Pennsylvania (St. Max, St. Thomas, St. Francis, St. Aloysius, and St. Cornelius). Pennsylvania swept the 1st round games setting the stage for the rest of the tournament.

The Semifinals of the main draw featured a thriller that took a buzzer beater by St. Aloysius to defeat St. Cornelius. St. Francis faced St. Aloysius in the Auk Cup final. St. Francis would be victorious by claiming their 1st Auk Cup in the Turkey Shootout. Congratulations to all the teams, players and coaches for making the 2022 Vince Filliben Turkey Shootout a success. Special thanks to tournament director Joe “Bubba” McDonald for all his efforts.

We wish all the teams the best of luck in their seasons. Archmere is already looking forward to hosting the 2023 edition once again next fall.
