Girls Basketball Wins Viking Invitational Tournament

Over Christmas break, the Archmere girls basketball team won the Hope Bracket at the Viking Invitational. The tournament, hosted by Saint Elizabeth's High School, welcomed twelve women's basketball teams and eight men's teams to their gym from December 28th through December 30th. Founded in 2020, the Viking Invitational Foundation made it their mission to bring a very competitive tournament to the St. E Center over the holidays that raises awareness and funds for the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware, which was founded by Archmere parent Denni Ferrara.
In the first round, the Auks defeated Polytech High School 42-29. Lydia Scarpaci '23 scored 10 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and had 6 assists. Lucy Oliver '24 and Bridget Malloy '26 each added 10 points as well in the win. In the championship game, the Auks took on previously undefeated Damascus High School from Maryland. In a tough defensive battle, the Auks pulled out a 38-27 win with many key contributions. Bridget Malloy '26 scored 12 points including going 7 for 8 from the free throw line. Lucy Oliver '24 added 11 points and 9 rebounds. Emily Mayo '25 and Ally Lengkeek '23 each hit a key 3-pointer in the second half, and Sara Denning '23 grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.  
 
Lucy Oliver ’24 was named the Most Outstanding Player for the bracket. Lucy finished the tournament with 21 points, 17 rebounds, 8 steals, and 4 assists. The tournament committee also chooses 1 girls player and 1 boys player to receive the A.C.E. Award (ambition, courage, encouragement). The award recognizes someone who is a great teammate on and off the court and makes a difference in their community. This year's winner was Sara Denning ‘23!
