Monthly College Counseling Update: January 2023

This is the time of year in the College Counseling Office that you never know what the day is going to bring. Seniors are still getting admission decisions and doing scholarship searches, we have juniors in class which is sparking a lot of questions, and providing CIALFO to sophomores this past cycle has some of them engaging our office. And as spring quickly approaches (let’s hope), all three classes are discussing future college visits and looking for advise and counsel. It’s a fun time of year!
Seniors:
  • The second of three waves of decisions is at hand. The late-earlies, those EA schools that didn’t release before the holidays have almost all sent decisions out. There are some additional ED2 decisions that will be released in the next two weeks. The final round of RD decisions (including applicants that were deferred in EA) will come out between mid-February and April 1.
  • We are happy to review financial aid awards and discuss final decisions. This conversation should be initiated by students and families. This is not a requirement. We are here to help if students and families want assistance. The only remaining requirements our office requests is to report all decisions, share all scholarship information, and inform our office of matriculation.
  • We advise students to sign up early for accepted student programs and schedule spring visits. We saw several schools close registration to these events last year, even for accepted students.
Juniors:
  • We will begin cycle three of College Seminar this week. Students are completing Junior Reflections, their first questionnaire, as homework. Next cycle’s homework is the Family Priority Exercise - instructions will be emailed out.
  • Reminder: if you intend on taking the March 11th SATs at Archmere, you should register now! April 15th ACT registration is also available. Mr. Jezyk will soon be sending out information about the in-school April 25th SAT that Archmere will offer.
  • If you intend to visit schools during Spring Break, please consider scheduling those visits now. These opportunities can fill up.
  • Family meetings will begin in late February. The exception being students who are working with Mrs. Reigner because of her maternity leave. Registration information will be sent out in mid-February.
Sophomores:
  • There’s one make-up class remaining for sophomores to register for CIALFO (our college organization and document submission system). There’s a brief homework assignment which is due 2/6.
First Years:
  • On February 8th during the assembly period, students will be participating in "The Great Sorting Game", an exercise that introduces variables that can influence admission decisions. The goal of the program is to provide a low-stress introduction to college counseling and spark some inquiry. We are hoping there are some family discussions at home about the exercise.
Upcoming Programming:
  • Young Alumni Career Panel (sophomores and juniors), February 8th (assembly period)
  • Young Alumni Networking (seniors), February 8th (assembly period)
  • The Great Sorting Game (first-years), February 8th (assembly period)
  • Junior Parent College Coffees, February 13th (8:10 am & 6:30 pm)
