Boys Basketball Holds On to Defeat Wilmington Friends
On Thursday, February 9, the boys basketball team competed in an exciting battle against Wilmington Friends at home in the Moglia Fieldhouse. Defense ran strong all night, as evidenced by the score after the first quarter: 4-2. By halftime the Auks were up 15-5, but after that the game went back and forth until the last few seconds, with the Auks coming away with a 35-33 victory.
Archmere’s boys basketball team took a 7-4 lead on Wilmington Friends on Feb. 9 when Charlie Malloy hit a three-point shot with about five minutes left in the first half. The Auks came within a few inches of losing that lead on a last-second shot by the Quakers, but the ball rattled off the front rim, and the Auks held of for a 35-33 victory at Moglia Fieldhouse.
The Auks led Friends by seven points with just 1:59 to go after running more than a minute off the clock and hitting one of two free throws. But the Quakers started making shots, and Archmere kept going one for two from the free throw line, and that advantage steadily dipped.
Archmere was up by four points after senior Chris Albero's free throw with 23 seconds to go, but Friends immediately answered with a 3-pointer with only 12 seconds left. Archmere hit the second of two free throws with 8.9 to go, and the Quakers had a chance to tie or take the lead. Their final shot hit the front rim, and Chris Albero was able to sweep it out of harm’s way to secure the victory.
Chris Albero and Matt McCarthy each scored 13 for the Auks. Archmere will travel to Delaware Military Academy on Saturday at 1 p.m.
