Archmere Seniors Named National Merit Finalists

Archmere seniors Rui (Leo) Chang, Alexander Chen, Natalie Gildea, Clare O’Dwyer, and Richard (Richie) Smith have met all requirements to advance to the Finalist standing of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) after being named Semifinalists in September 2022. These academically talented seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered to the winners. The selection of approximately 7,250 Merit Scholarship award winners from the group of nearly 16,000 will be decided in March.
Leo, Alex, Natalie, Clare and Richie were first named Semifinalists in September, meaning their PSAT test scores, taken in their junior year, were among the top 1% of the nearly 1.6 million test takers. This month, they were recognized as Finalists. A Finalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test.

As Finalists, Leo, Alex, Natalie, Clare and Richie received Certificates of Merit and notification that the NMSC will begin mailing scholarship offers to the winners this spring. The National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 362,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Congratulations and best of luck to our National Merit Finalists!
