Conor McAvinue '17 Selected to the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Following a comprehensive audition process and a three-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world to serve as dynamic music ambassadors. Archmere senior Conor McAvinue was selected as one of ten violists from the entire nation to be a part of this year’s NYO. The competitive application process included several recordings, recommendation letters, as well as personal essays. This five week summer program starts July 1 with a three week residency at SUNY Purchase College, where NYO will work with orchestra director James Ross as well as principal players from all of America’s greatest orchestras. NYO kicks off their concert tour with their annual performance at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditiorium/Perelman Stage on July 21. As part of the orchestra, Conor will then travel to Latin America with conductor Marin Alsop and perform a program that includes a new Carnegie Hall–commissioned work by Gabriela Lena Frank and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 to give performances in Mexico City, Mexico; Quito, Ecuador; and Bogotá, Colombia.
