Juniors Place Second in the Nation and Seniors Earn Sixth at WordWright Challenge

In this year's third meet of the WordWright Challenge, two teams of Archmere students won high honors. Held in February, the Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of prose and poetry, included 631 school teams from across the country. Archmere's eleventh graders placed second in the nation and the twelfth graders placed sixth in the nation.

Students who won high individual honors in the meet included juniors Natasha Gengler, Helen Laster, Ryan Nowaczyk, Grace Dignazio, Kathleen Griffith, and Giavanna Mariano; and seniors Arianna Abbrescia, Keelin Reilly, Leah DaCosta, and Olivia O'Dwyer. Juniors Sophia Friedman, Shreyas Parab, and Padraic Walsh earned Honorable Mention.

More than 64,000 students from 48 states across the country participated in the meet. Archmere English Department Chair and Teacher, Stephen Klinge supervised the students. The texts for the third WordWright meet this year were a pair of poems by Margaret Atwood and Katha Pollit. The students will participate in one more meet over the coming months, and medal and certificates will be awarded in June to those who have achieved and/or progressed the most in the course of the year.
