Rising Seniors Michael Devine and Shreyas Parab Represent Archmere at Delaware Boys State

Through the Boys State program, the American Legion teaches youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society. The program focuses on participation and personal experience in a model state government, complete with governing bodies and elected public officials, mirroring the structure and operation Delaware's state government. While at Boys State, Archmere representative Shreyas Parab was chosen to serve as Governor for the week, while Michael Devine was selected to move on and represent the state of Delaware next month at Boys Nation.

The Delaware Boys State program includes a mock county council session for each county, a question and answer sessions with both elected, appointed, and hired county officials and staff, four mornings of a mock legislative session in the Delaware State House and Delaware State Senate Chambers, and four afternoons of classroom sessions of different aspects of state government. Governor Carney addressed both programs and met individually with the Boys State Governor, Archmere senior Shreyas Parab, and the Girls State Governor, Natalie Nwanekwu of Newark Charter High School.

Michael Devine '18 is one of two representatives in Delaware chosen to attend Boys Nation in Washington, DC, where the young leaders receive an education on the structure and function of federal government. At the event, each delegate acts as a senator from his state. The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet with elected officials from their home states.

Both Michael and Shreyas are continuing on a family tradition at Boys State. Three years ago, their older brothers were also chosen to represent Archmere. Sean Devine ’15 served as Governor and Paya Parab ’15 was selected for Boys Nation.
