2011 Archmere Graduate Trevor Brown Launches Company to Fight Opioid Crisis
Archmere Academy graduate Trevor Brown '11, a Biomedical Engineer, is making headlines for a project he started working on as part of his senior project at the University of South Carolina. Trevor recently started his own company with the aim of being on the forefront of the opioid epidemic. DEact Medical Solutions was launched in April with his older brother Kyle, a 2008 graduate of Archmere. Privately funded at the moment, DEact has created a drug-neutralizing pouch that, when you add water, takes the active ingredients in drugs and renders them useless.
DEact disposal technology offers the ability to chemically neutralize a broad range of pharmaceutical substances, reducing environmental impact and decreasing the opportunity for diversion. Through partnerships with local healthcare facilities, community agencies, home care and hospice, funeral homes, realtors, and others, DEact strives to reduce the amount of unused or expired prescription drugs in homes and stop addiction before it begins.
At the moment, DEact works out of a lab at the University of Delaware's STAR campus and an office space at the Emerging Enterprise Center, the small business incubator on the riverfront in Wilmington. At the Enterprise Center, DEact was one of 11 companies to submit a three-minute video pitch in a competition called "Swim with Sharks". The winner gets a package totaling more than $22,000 in cash and services. DEact is one of three finalists that will compete at a live pitch event on Friday, September 22nd.
