Archmere Rugby Players Competing for Collegiate National Title

While they were at Archmere, Noah Niumataiwalu ‘16 and Chris Curcio ‘14 were part of the Auks Rugby team that claimed not only a state and regional title, but then went on to win the National Championship. Just three years after starting its rugby program, Archmere reached the pinnacle of the sport at the high school level by defeating Rock Rugby from Texas 17-5 in the championship game of the High School Rugby Challenge (HSRC) Single School 7s National Championship.

This season, both boys are on the starting squad of the Saint Joseph’s University Rugby team that just beat West Chester University 24-7 in the semifinals and then defeated Rowan University 27-11 in the Championship match, becoming the Conference Champions and securing their spot to play in the USA Rugby Nationals. This is the second year in a row that Saint Joe’s has earned the D1AA Fall 15’s Championship.

In the semifinal conference match, Chris Curcio ’14 made headlines with his run that caused the Hawks to take a 12-0 lead. In the championship match, it was Noah Niumataiwalu ’16 who exploited a gap in the Rowan defensive line and dove in for the first score of the night. Noah was named the Hawks Rugby Landmark Americana of City Line Avenue Man of the Match for the 2017 MARC D1AA Championship Weekend. In addition, he was named D1AA MVP for the MARC.

As conference champions, the Saint Joe’s Hawks have secured a bid to the first round of USA Rugby Collegiate Nationals in Ohio on November 18th & 19th. Archmere rugby players Mark Dombroski ‘17, Ryan O'Neill ‘17 and Tanner McIlrath ’16 are also on the Saint Joe’s team.
