Nicole Witherell '19 Plays Key Role As Girls' Soccer Shuts Out Charter

On Friday at a game against Wilmington Charter, Archmere freshman Nicole Witherell moved from her usual midfielder position to goalkeeper for the Auks, stepping in for their injured goalie. Charter, ranked third in Division I, had several shots on goal, but they were either wide of the net, went over the net, or found their way right into Nicole's hands.

Nicole helped shut out Charter with 20 saves, allowing visiting Archmere, ranked third in Division II, to pick up a critical 1-0 win and improve to 11-1-2 on the season. In The News Journal article Nicole states, "I got all of my nerves out before the game and just tried to do the very best I can. My defense did a great job in front of me."

“Nicole really stepped up today,” said junior Leah DeCosta, who scored the game’s only goal in the 65th minute to give Archmere the win. “They had a lot of chances in that first half and she denied every one of them.”

Archmere looks to continue their winning streak as the Division II girls soccer tournament gets started in the next week.
