Senior Mentoring Program
The Student Mentors had their third mentoring session at St. Mary Magdalen School on Wednesday. These sessions comprise of six senior mentors that have been carefully chosen to work with 7th and 8th graders at SMM. The students meet for thirty minutes in the library at St. Mary Magdalen. The students are separated by gender and have the opportunity to talk openly with Archmere seniors about particular topics they are curious about. We cover things such as time management, social issues, athletics, academics just to name a few. The middle schoolers enjoy hearing any kinds of advice our seniors have for them when it comes to making the most out of their high school experience.
We have found this mentorship program to be a valuable asset for both the high school students as well as the middle school students because both sides are gaining guidance and wisdom from each experience. The strong interpersonal relationships this mentoring program is creating provides an opportunity for young people to benefit from the advice and support of the seniors and is helping the seniors to become strong leaders and role models.
DEI:
On February 4 - State Representatives Larry Lambert and Sherry Walker-Dorsey attended the closing ceremony for the YW Leaders. Both Representative Lambert and Walker were guest speakers during the YW Leaders ten-week training. They talked to the students about their careers and ways to get involved in social action in the state.
On February 15 - Marc Ross ‘91 and Herman Ross’ 77 had a lunch and learn session with students from every grade to talk to them about their careers in the NFL and Real Estate. During their time with the students they were able to share their experiences as men of color learning and working in environments where there is little representation. Marc and Herman both referenced their father as the driving force behind staying motivated and focused on their goals. They both mentioned that they were told to work twice as hard as their peers and to always be kind to others when facing challenges.
On February 29 - Mr. Sonny Knox and Dr. David Wilkes came back to Archmere to talk to the DEI Club about Hockessin Colored School 107C. Mr. Knox is 93 years old and he was able to share his experiences of receiving and education in the state before and after segregation.
