The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit organization that presents the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, has recognized tenth-grader Sophia Silverman ’28 with a National Gold Medal in the Fashion Design category for her innovative illuminated dress, Tableware Exoskeleton. Constructed entirely from paper plates, the striking design showcases Sophia’s creativity and craftsmanship. The award-winning piece was also featured at Archmere’s Annual Arts & Design Festival in April.
In 2026, over 110,000 students entered more than 335,000 original works of art and writing to the 2026 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and 650 works were awarded National Gold Medals. Gold Medals are determined by some of the foremost leaders in the visual arts for excellence in originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
To mark the momentous occasion, on Tuesday evening the iconic Empire State Building was illuminated in gold in honor of the National Medalists.
Archmere students have been recognized with 12 National Scholastic Medals since 2021, across multiple art and design categories, including fashion, architecture & industrial design, graphic design, sculpture, painting, drawing and mixed media.
