Football Improves to 2-0 with 8-0 Shutout Over St. Mark’s
The Archmere football team improved to 2-0 with an impressive defensive performance and a hard-fought 8-0 victory over St. Mark’s on the road on Friday night. The win marked Archmere’s first Class 2A victory of the season and the Auks’ second consecutive shutout.
After a scoreless first half, Archmere broke through in the fourth quarter. With less than 10 minutes remaining, junior Wyatt Beekley found the end zone on a three-yard touchdown run to cap a six-play, all-rushing scoring drive. The Auks added the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.
The Archmere ground game controlled much of the evening, rushing for more than 200 yards. Junior quarterback Shane Harding led all rushers with 126 yards, while Beekley finished with 58 yards and a touchdown. Junior Nathan Blessington added nearly 70 yards on the ground.
While the offense steadily moved the ball, the Auks' defense continued to set the tone. Archmere held St. Mark’s scoreless throughout the game and came up with several key stops, including a fourth-down stop late in the fourth quarter with the Spartans threatening to tie the game. The Auks' defense recorded two sacks and limited St. Mark’s from reaching the end zone, securing Archmere’s first shutout against the Spartans since the 2021 DIAA quarterfinals.
With the victory, Archmere moves to 2-0 on the season and now turns its attention to another Class 2A matchup. The Auks will travel to Delaware Military Academy on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.
