Monthly College Counseling Update: April 2018

Decision Day Celebration

We are quickly approaching the universally practiced May 1st enrollment deposit deadline day. This is the date that most colleges guarantee their offers until and thus the date when students must decide where they are matriculating.

It’s also a wonderful day of celebration for our seniors as it marks the end of the college search journey and in some cases the beginning of their transition process to college. We encourage seniors to don apparel from their future school and to come down to the College Counseling during their free periods to take pictures together, write thank you notes to those that have helped them throughout the process, and to celebrate with their classmates. The reverse assembly day will conclude with a class picture on the steps of St. Norbert Hall and celebratory Rita’s Water Ice.

May Programs

The College Counseling Office has three May programs. The first is the After School Workshops for juniors. Archmere will welcome a dozen-or-so college admission representatives to Archmere on Monday, May 21st to assist with college programming. The voluntary program will include two classroom sessions and a mock-interview opportunity for each student. That evening, all Archmere students and families are invited to the Wilmington Case Studies program sponsored by the Delaware Association of Independent Schools at Salesianum School. Approximately 50 college admissions representatives will read college applications with guests in small groups to give all in attendance a peek into the discussions an admission committee has during the decision making process. The night will conclude with a short college fair to permit additional conversation with admission representatives. Registration for both programs will be sent out later in April.

Junior Career Day

On Wednesday, May 23rd Archmere Juniors will be participating in Career Day. Professionals from numerous career fields will be giving classroom presentations. Students will have three or four speakers to choose from during the six time slots. Many of our guests are Archmere parents and alumni. This is a very informative day and a wonderful opportunity for students to expand upon their interest in specific careers, learn about potential college majors, and hopefully introduce themselves to fields they may not know much about.
