Archmere Football to Play for State Championship Title
On November 25th the Archmere football team met a spirited Woodbridge for the semifinal match-up of the DIAA State Tournament. The Auks piled up 463 yards of total offense on their home field Saturday, barreling past Woodbridge 56-28 in the Class 2A semifinals. Archmere now moves on to their third state final in four seasons.
The Blue Raiders' offense was explosive early, equally matched by the Auks' offense, as they quickly answered both of Woodbridge's early scores to tie it up at 14-14 less than five minutes in. After the rest of the quarter went scoreless, Woodbridge struck midway through the second to make it a 22-14 game.
Yet again, Archmere responded, as Miles Kempski ’24 scrambled in for a score on the ensuing possession to tie it up at 22-22, which would be the halftime score.
The second half was where the game really swung, as Archmere scored on the opening possession to go up 28-22, then forced a fumble on Woodbridge's opening possession and scored again to go up 36-22.
The game never got within one score. Quarterback Miles Kempski ’24 did most of the offensive damage on Saturday, rushing 13 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns and completing 9 of 17 passes for 171 yards and two more scores. Highlights also include a 65 yard interception return by Brendan Burke ’24. Drew Duncan ’24 caught four passes for 111 yards and two scores for the Auks.
The win propels the second-seeded Auks into the DIAA Class 2A championship Saturday, December 2 against Caravel. Kickoff is 3:00pm at the University of Delaware.
