Archmere Girls Soccer Upsets Defending State Champion Caravel to Reach Semifinals
The Archmere girls soccer team pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the DIAA Division II tournament Thursday night, defeating defending State Champion and No. 2 seed Caravel, 1-0, in the quarterfinals to advance to the state semifinals.
The 10th-seeded Auks entered the matchup as underdogs against a Caravel squad that won last year’s state title and had defeated Archmere 4-0 earlier this season. But this time, the Auks flipped the script with a determined defensive effort and a timely goal by Allison Perpiglia '28 to secure the shutout victory.
Archmere controlled the tempo throughout much of the match and standout goalie Lucy Fiacco '27 held off repeated pressure from the Buccaneers in the second half to preserve the one-goal lead. The win sends the Auks into the semifinals, where they will face No. 3 seed St. Mark’s on June 3. Location and time TBD.
The victory continues a strong postseason tradition for Archmere girls soccer, which captured the Division II state championship in 2023 and now finds itself two wins away from another title appearance. Congratulations and best of luck to the team as they move forward!
