Archmere Baseball Advances with 2-1 Victory Over William Penn in DIAA Tournament
Archmere baseball kept its postseason run alive Tuesday afternoon, edging William Penn 2-1 in a tightly contested first-round DIAA State Tournament matchup.
In a game that featured strong pitching and solid defense from both teams, the Auks broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning and made the lead stand to advance to the round two of the tournament.
Pitcher Grady Wheeler delivered a standout performance on the mound for Archmere, limiting the Colonials to just one run while striking out eight batters and scattering six hits over his outing. Wheeler consistently worked out of trouble and kept William Penn's offense from generating sustained rallies.
The Auks struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Fabris reached base and later came around to score when Luke Luzader ripped a double, giving Archmere an early 1-0 advantage.
William Penn answered quickly in the top of the third to even the score at 1-1. The game remained deadlocked until the sixth inning when Archmere capitalized on a defensive miscue. Reese O'Halloran reached base on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner Chris Lotkowski. With one out, Fabris came through with the biggest hit of the afternoon, lining a single that scored Lotkowski with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Fabris finished with an RBI single and a run scored, while Shane Harding paced the Archmere offense with two hits. The Auks' defense took care of the rest, preserving the one-run lead and securing the hard-fought victory.
With the win, Archmere continues its pursuit of a State Championship and advances to face Lake Forest. The Auks will return to action Thursday on the road at Lake Forest as they look to keep their postseason run alive.
