Baseball Team Advances in State Tournament with Upset Victory
Archmere is moving on in the state baseball tournament after earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over No. 6 seed Lake Forest on Thursday.
The Auks struck first in the opening inning when Silas Aulick delivered a sacrifice fly that brought home Luke Kenney for a 1-0 lead. Lake Forest answered in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Spartans threatened multiple times throughout the contest, putting runners in scoring position, but strong pitching and timely defense from the Auks kept them from breaking through. The game remained deadlocked until the top of the ninth inning, when Luke Kenney singled and then stole second base. Reese O'Halloran followed with a clutch single that scored Kenney with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Archmere pitchers Shane Harding and Zach Buchta were outstanding on the mound, combining to limit Lake Forest to six hits while striking out 12 batters. Their efforts helped preserve the victory and send the Auks into the next round of the tournament.
The victory marked Archmere's second consecutive win and improved the team's overall record to 14-7 on the season. The Auks will travel to take on No. 3 seed Caesar Rodney today at 4:00 p.m., with a semifinal spot on the line.
