McKayla Hwang '27 Wins First Place in Senior String Competition
McKayla Hwang '27, a 17-year-old Violinist from Wilmington, was named the First Place winner of the Senior String category in the Delaware state tier of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Performance Competitions.
The prestigious event brings together the most talented young classical musicians across the country. McKayla is a student of Shelley Beard in Philadelphia. During the competition, McKayla performed a rigorous program of classical repertoire, impressing the expert judge with pieces by Bach and Saint-Saëns.
As the First Place winner, McKayla will now advance to the Eastern division tier of the competition. The upcoming round will determine who moves forward to perform live at the national event.
"We are incredibly proud of McKayla's hard work and dedication," said Mary Ellen Schauber, Director of the Helena Raskob Arts Institute (HRAI) of Archmere Academy. "Preparing this level of repertoire requires intense discipline, mature musical expression, and hundreds of hours of practice. Competing at the MTNA level is a massive milestone for any young musician."
McKayla is currently a senior at Archmere Academy. In addition to her studies, McKayla performs with the Pennsylvania Youth Symphony and is student leader of Archmere's HRAI String Ensemble.
The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) is a nonprofit organization of independent and collegiate music teachers committed to furthering the art of music through programs that nurture professional growth and support outstanding student performance.
