Dr. James Stockman '61 Receives Award for Lifetime Contributions to Pediatric Medical Education

James A. Stockman III, MD '61 presented with Special Award by the Association of Pediatric Program Directors for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Pediatric Medical Education and the Development of Pediatricians. Dr. Stockman is Senior Advisor for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and Senior Fellow for the ABP Foundation. Previously, Dr. Stockman served 20 years as President and CEO of the ABP and the ABP Foundation.
He received his undergraduate degree from St. Joseph’s College and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Stockman was Chief Resident at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and later a visiting fellow in the Division of Oncology. He completed an additional fellowship in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, formerly known as SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. In 1974, the same year he was first certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. He was promoted to Associate Professor and Vice-Chair in 1977 and then made Full Professor in 1981.

In 1984, he became Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Medical School. Between 1984 and 1992, he served as Chair of Medicine, Physician-in-Chief, and Women’s Board Centennial Chair in Pediatrics at Children’s Memorial Hospital, as well as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern. He is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University Medical School. He has authored more than 200 publications, including several widely respected books in the field.

He is a long time Editor of the Year Book of Pediatrics, having first stepped into the role in 1991 after serving as the Co-Editor from 1979-1991. Dr. Stockman was a member of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) from 1986-92, serving as the APPD President from 1990-92.

He is the 2005 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award given by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, as well as the 2004 recipient of the Richard D. Wood Distinguished Alumni Award given by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Alumni Organization. He also is the 1999 recipient of the Joseph W. St. Geme, Jr., Leadership Award, and in 1992 he received the American Academy of Pediatrics Professional Medical Education Award.
