Archmere Community Members Contribute to State Genealogical Book
Archmere graduate, past parent and current grandparent, Donn Devine '46 and past parent and current grandparent, Collette Watson, members of the Delaware Genealogical Society, were contributing authors to a new book about the first families of the First State that has just been published, titled "Delaware Families 1787-1800."
From the News Journal: "A book first proposed more than 20 years ago about the first families of the First State has just been published, and the people who compiled and edited "Delaware Families 1787-1800" for the Delaware Genealogical Society are relieved, satisfied and excited.
Colette Watson, the society's vice president, "spent every spare moment I had for three years" on editing, focusing on the book's 5,863 citations. And she doesn't even have a Delaware heritage.
The 498-page book acknowledges contributions by 17 society members – plus 100 people (some now deceased) who spent years to write and research profiles of 132 families that cover 1,900 surnames and 8,000 names.
So society members – including Donn Devine (who wrote the introduction) and Kay Schorah and Robbie Snowdon (on research) – pored over profiles and supporting documentation that had been submitted years before. Making a book meant more editing, research and verification, Watson said, to reflect higher standards in genealogy today and new data.
