During his years at Archmere, Joe was an accomplished athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball graduating with seven varsity letters. Joe is especially proud of his football career at Archmere, starting his freshman year as a member of Archmere's first undefeated JV Football team; in his sophomore year Joe was one of three sophomores elevated to the varsity football team which went to the Division II State finals; in Joe's junior year he was a starting running back as a member of Archmere's first Division II Delaware State Football Title.

In his senior year, Joe served as a tri-captain for Archmere’s second Division II State Football Championship team. Joe was nominated that year to Delaware's first-team All-Catholic and second-team All-State teams. Joe was a recipient of the 1980 Michael DeLucia Sportsmanship Award, presented to the Catholic student athlete who has exemplified outstanding performance, attitude and character on and off the field. A highlight for Joe’s football career was his nomination to play in the Delaware Blue-Gold All Star game to benefit DFRC. Joe has fond memories of the event and time spent with his All Star Buddy from the Blue-Gold Hand-in-Hand program. Joe went on to play football at Widener University until his football career was halted by injury.
Joe graduated from Widener University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. After college Joe was fortunate enough to come back to Archmere and serve as coach of Archmere's 1987 JV Football team leading them to the Academy's second undefeated JV season (6-0-1) in Archmere history.
