Thomas Diamanty ’15 and Makala Wang ’17 Win National Scholastic Art Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth since 1923. The awards have grown to be the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition initiative for creative teens, and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. Students across America submitted 255,000 original works that are blindly judged by leaders in the visual and literary arts. This year, two Archmere students received national awards. Thomas Diamanty ’15 received a Gold Key award for his digital submission “Hang Me Up to Dry”. His work will be on display in New York City starting in June and then will travel the country for two years at various galleries. Makala Wang ’17 won a Silver Key award for her photography submission “Champagne Reflections”.
Archmere's art students have always won strong recognition in this competition. The Silver and Gold awards are on display in the gallery on the Delaware State University Dover campus for one month and then the Gold recipients’ work moves to the national level. The national events for these prestigious awards take place June 10-12 in New York City. A few of the events scheduled are a special ceremony at Carnegie Hall, a show at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery of student work and a Maker Prom at the Roosevelt Hotel. On Thursday the Empire State Building will be lit in gold to honor the National Medalists.
