As the current Delaware State Rugby Champions and Subaru Sevens Tournament Champions, the Archmere Rugby team made their first national High School Rugby Challenge appearance this year. The Challenge, or HSRC, is the nation’s premier High School Sevens Rugby Tournament and was held in Philadelphia May 29 through May 31, 2015.
The Auks went 3-0 in pool play, and then defeated heavily favored Perry Street Prep Pride of Washington, D.C., 19-10 in the semifinals. The News Journal writes: "It was a huge upset," Cocco said. "That was the key to the whole thing. It was a turning point. The kids saw themselves beat Pride, and they thought, 'If we can beat them, we can beat anybody.' "
The semifinal win placed the Auks into the championship game, where they defeated Rock Rugby from Texas 17-5, in the main stadium, where the Philadelphia Union plays its home MLS matches. The Archmere athletes faced a tough opponent, but their heart and hustle on the field, in the end, was unmatched. Goff Rugby Report, the definitive rugby ranking website at the high school and collegiate levels, writes: The Auks executed their game plan almost to perfection, deciding to stay out of contact against the much bigger Rock team, and with smart passing, agile footwork, and plenty of support, they danced away from tackles and controlled possession for most of the game.
