Conor McAvinue '17 Wins 45th Annual Newark Symphony Youth Concerto Competition

Archmere junior Conor McAvinue won the high school division of the 45th Annual Newark Symphony Youth Concerto Competition this month. Funded by the Pasquale Fund for Young Musicians, the Newark Symphony Orchestra (NSO) annually sponsors a concerto competition for both High School and College Division student artists. This competition is designed to encourage and foster the development of young performing artists in the Delaware Valley. Each winner will perform an entire concerto with the NSO, as well as receive a $400 honorarium. Performing Hindemith’s Der Schwanendreher mvt. 3, Conor competed against high school students from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. As the High School Division winner, Conor will perform as a soloist with the Newark Symphony Orchestra during the May 8, 2016 concert at the Independence School.

This year, Conor is the Associate Principal violist (2nd chair) for the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. The youth orchestra will perform several times at Verizon Hall, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Conor will also be doing an internship assisting the Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra where he will mentor the younger string students, reinforcing their technique and musicality while developing his own teaching skills.
