Monthly College Counseling Update: January 2017

A Focus on Juniors

The College Counseling Office has begun to transition a larger portion of our focus to junior families since returning from the Christmas holiday. We’ve met individually with almost every member of the Class of 2018, completed two junior parent nights, and will begin meeting with junior families in February. The larger class size required us to get an early start and we’d like to thank the juniors and their families for being very responsive to our requests for signups and registrations.

Engaging Underclassmen

We will be visiting sophomore health classes at the start of the second semester to provide them Naviance access. Students will register, complete a few activities, and learn to navigate the college search information system. We will also engage Archmere freshman with an activity in their January class meeting during the assembly time.

Decision Timeline

Seniors are by no means being ignored. While a few colleges release early action decisions in January and even February (yes, doesn’t seem early), decisions being released now are primarily coming from rolling admission schools. Mid-Year Reports will go out to all active application schools for each student with their semester grades as soon as they are available. And the next robust round of admission decisions will begin to be released in mid-March. We completed our last cycle of College Seminar classes with seniors last week and will be working individually with students and families from now to the end of the year.

Upcoming Programs

Our next program is the Early Financial Aid Night on February 7th at 7 pm, in the SLC.  Mr. Boehm and Ms. Souza have made plans to visit several New England schools over the next few months to further develop relationships and identify good matches for our students. For families interested in good college resource reads, we recommend Frank Bruni’s Where You Go Is Not Who You Will Be, and Jeff Selingo’s There’s Life After College.
