Archmere Hosts TEAMS Competition

On March 16th, 36 Archmere students participated in a State TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) Competition in the SLC. The goal of TEAMS is to have students work collaboratively to develop practical and creative solutions to real world engineering problems. Each team competed in three areas: essay, multiple choice, and design/build. This year’s theme was “Engineering the Environment.”

Archmere had three teams competing at the 9/10 level and three teams competing at the 11/12 level. Each team submitted an essay prior to the competition on a source of renewable energy they would choose to generate power for Delaware within the next five years, including the estimated costs of their solution. The onsite competition is comprised of a multiple choice section based on 8 topics including geothermal energy, water treatment, self-contained ecosystems, and home energy use, to name a few. The design/build section asked each team to develop a robot arm out of every day materials such as cardboard, hangers, and string, to move a bottle of water to a specific target.  Each team’s design was judged at a testing station at the conclusion of the competition.  Archmere students were creative and enthusiastic and several of our teams have been invited to compete in the National TEAMS Competition held in Orlando, Florida this June.
