The Delaware Envirothon provides students with an integrated approach to exploring five natural resource categories. It tests their creativity, analytical thinking, and team-building skills in a competitive format. Envirothon is a "day-in-the-field" where teams visit testing stations for problem solving opportunities in: Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Oral Presentation, Soil/Land use, Wildlife, Current Environmental issue, and Air Quality. Archmere students Connor Smeader, Kyra Giakas, Grace Dignazio, Nina Giakas, and David Dewees participated in this year's Envirothon Workshop at the Ted Harvey Wildlife Center in Dover.
Opportunity to Host Exchange Students
Archmere Academy, in cooperation with AFS, a leader in international education, is offering the opportunity to host a student from a foreign country. Strong ties are usually forged between the foreign student and the host families that last a lifetime. If you would like more information or are interested in sponsoring a student for the 2018-2019 school year, please contact Mrs. Rosalba Bellen.

Model UN Conference (AUKMUN)
Archmere hosted its annual Model UN Conference (AUKMUN) this past weekend. Most of our participation was spent planning and facilitating the conference. For example, Maddi Larmore and Tash Gengler did the brunt of the planning and organizing. Shreyas Parab facilitated an insightful and lively discussion with Governor Jack Markell. Committees were chaired by Jack Flynn, Lea Harlev, Gillen Curren, Tash Gengler, and from the class of 2017 Max Beck and Haley Levinsky. Alisa Yakovenko kept the committees engaged with riveting crises. Finally, Melina Reilly and Shreyas Parab were awarded Honorable Mentions as delegates.

Rohit Mathur, Owen Phillips, Alexis Rendel, Sophia Liston, and Seth Bale represented the school. Archmere is only one of four schools (Cab Calloway, Ursuline, Wilmington Charter, Archmere) to found the first Delaware chapter of the National Speech and Debate Association. Previously, Delaware was the only state without a chapter, though it has been a long-standing member of the Philadelphia Catholic Forensics League (PCFL). Winners from Saturday qualify for NSDA Nationals in Washington, DC, over Memorial Day weekend.
Spanish Exchange Program in Zaragoza, Spain
From March 25th to April 3rd, sixteen Archmere students will be traveling to Zaragoza, Spain. This exchange program provides invaluable cultural, linguistic, and social experiences for all students involved. Students will participate in excursions to Madrid, Barcelona, and Toledo, and also attend class with their host students at Colegio Santa Ana. Some exciting things we are looking forward to are visits to the Royal Palace and soccer stadium in Madrid, a sword factory in Toledo, and the Picasso Museum and Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. A huge thank you to all of the families involved in the program and who help make this exchange trip happen!
Chinese Field Trip to Philadelphia
On Feb 28th, Archmere Chinese students and two teachers enjoyed a class trip to Philadelphia. Photos highlight a dim sum banquet in a traditional Chinese restaurant, a Chinese bubble and fruit tea tasting, and a visit to the Franklin Institute for the Terracotta Warriors exhibit. Below is a quote from a Chinese 2 student’s work after her exhibition visit: “The warriors symbolize an army of protection to emperor Qin in his afterlife. They are so important to Chinese culture because emperor Qin wanted to live forever but his life was taken away from him due to his intake of poisonous mercury balls. The ancient Chinese value their emperors and the warriors were created to symbolize protection for their emperor."
