Monthly College Counseling Update: May 2018

College Transition Program

In an effort to say farewell and good luck to our graduating seniors and their families, we will be hosting a College Transition Program prior to graduation practice on Friday, June 1st.

The optional parent section of the program starts at
8 am in the theater. We will welcome Ms. Alicia Dunphy-Culp, Director of First and Second Year Initiatives at Villanova University, to talk to parents, followed by a past parent Q&A panel. We ask that parents register in advance at https://pickatime.com/client?ven=11607878&event=323330. Graduating seniors are required to arrive at 10:30 for transition activities followed by graduation practice at noon.

May Wrap-Up

It’s been a wonderfully hectic month of May in College Counseling, commencing on May 1 with our College Decision Day celebration. This week we also hosted the College Admission After School Workshops for juniors. Twenty-three students participated in two classroom sessions, one on quantitative versus holistic admissions presented by representatives from Villanova and South Carolina, and another on supplemental essays presented by the University of Chicago and Franklin and Marshall. All students also completed a mock-interview with admission representatives from ten different schools. Some participating colleges were Johns Hopkins, Bucknell, and Gettysburg. In the evening about 25 Archmere families attended the Wilmington Case Studies program at Salesianum where they participated in a mock-admission committee exercise with admission representatives from around the country and attended a mini-college fair.

Junior Career Day Success

On May 23rd, we hosted our annual Career Day for juniors. The day started with a welcome from Archmere parent, Brad Denning, a partner at PwC. Throughout the day students attended six different speakers from twenty different options. We’d like to thank all those that assisted with the day, especially our twenty-one alumni, parents, and friends of Archmere that shared their stories with our students.

What To Expect This Summer

At some point over the next two weeks rising juniors and seniors will receive an email with a checklist of recommended summer actions to best prepare them for their upcoming college search and application process. Parents will also be receiving their own to-do checklist. As a reminder, the College Counseling Office is open during the summer months to answer questions and assist students and families.
