Review Written By Cappies Critics Alexis Rendel '21, Stephen D'Antonio '20 and Kyla McAvinue '19 Published
The Cappies, "Critics and Awards Program," is a program through which high school theatre and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write reviews, and publish those reviews.
Alexis Rendel '21, Stephen D'Antonio '20 and Kyla McAvinue '19 are part of Archmere's six-member Cappies critic team that must attend five shows in the Greater Philadelphia Area and then write critical reviews of the shows that they see. Mentors select from the 30 - 50 critical reviews to be published on the Cappies website. The top two reviews also get published on the Philly.com Wordpress blog.
Alexis Rendel and Stephen D'Antonio were both selected as the top reviews for the shows that they saw (Alexis's review of Marple Newtown's production of Bye Bye Birdie and Stephen's review of Sun Valley's Pippin). This was Stephen's second published review (he also got top honors for his review of Interboro's 12 Angry Jurors in the fall) which puts him in the running for the junior critic award!
Kyla McAvinue, our Cappies lead critic, also got published on the Cappies website this weekend for her review of Pippin.
Other members of the team include: Julia Parisi, Melina Reilly, and Reilly McAvinue.
In May, at the Cappies Gala, awards will be given for performance, non-performance, and best critics. Getting published earns a critic points towards that critic award. Archmere's winter musical, The Addams Family, was a Cappies show this year, and hosted over forty critics from all over the Philly area.
