Advanced Cancer Research Analysis Class Travels to CHOP
Students in Archmere's Advanced Cancer Research class visited the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on Thursday, November 9th to tour the labs, shadow surgeons and spend time in the D3b facility. The students split the day between shadowing doctors and nurses in the hospital, and several demonstrations in the D3b research lab.
D3b’s scientific research platforms target pediatric cancers and rare diseases of childhood development, with pediatric brain tumors as an area of research emphasis. On Thursday, students spent time in labs that focus on gene sequencing and PCR.
Archmere's Advanced Cancer course is designed for students interested in the medical field. It consists of three parts; a genetics class, a data analysis class, and an internship with CHOP. In the first part of the course, students will learn about the purpose of the D3 b program at CHOP by studying cancer, its causes, and treatments. In the second part, students will learn how to analyze data collected from patients in order to evaluate treatments and disease progression. All parts will include keynote speakers from CHOP, visits to relevant sections of the D3b program, and each semester will culminate in a poster project to be presented at an in-house conference. Over the summer, students will have the opportunity to intern with the D3b program, including shadowing in the hospital setting and research labs, and working on a specific data analysis project.
