Vincent J. Filliben Mid Atlantic Turkey Shootout

The Third Annual Vince Filliben Turkey Shootout took place over the course of Thanksgiving weekend at the Moglia Fieldhouse. The tournament, named after legendary Archmere teacher, athlete, coach and Hall of Fame member Mr. Vince Filliben, featured 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams from Delaware and Pennsylvania. The Turkey Shootout was organized by 1998 Archmere graduate and Assistant Athletic Director, Mr. Nick Sanna.
The tournament featured 7th and 8th grade boys teams from Delaware (St. Edmond’s, St. John’s, and St. Mary Magdalen) and Pennsylvania (St. Max, St. Thomas, St. Francis, St. Kevin’s, and St. Cornelius). Pennsylvania was looking to build on last year’s success when they swept the Delaware teams in the first round. However, the Delaware teams took two out of three first round matchups in the 2023 edition. St. Cornelius was victorious in the Gold Cup, while St. Thomas would win the Green Cup; St. John’s took home the White Cup.

The main draw would feature defending champion St. Francis square off against the inaugural champs, St. Edmond’s Academy. In an incredibly hard fought game, St. Edmond’s emerged victorious, earning their second Auk Cup in three years.

Congratulations to all the teams, players and coaches for making the 2023 Vince Filliben Turkey Shootout a success. We wish them all the best of luck in their seasons. In addition, special thanks to tournament director Joe “Bubba” McDonald for all of his efforts.

Archmere is already looking forward to hosting the 2024 edition once again next fall.
