Archmere Combines Art and Science with Interdisciplinary Class

Mr. Bill Mulhearn's Environmental Science Class and Mr. Terry Newitt's Architectural/Environmental Design class marry art and science in an exciting new way. The combined classes met for the first time in the Manor this semester. Everyone is very enthused, especially the involved students about this 3 week collaboration.

Students will learn how to design a zero energy/passive-solar home, will learn the tenets of "organic architecture" espoused by Frank LLoyd Wright, and will build a wind turbine. Students will be required to produce composite pages of "eco-friendly" information by learning rudiments of Adobe PhotoShop(Creative Suite) software on their laptops. Science students will be helped through this process by the Architecture students who are familiar with PhotoShop. The class will be producing rough room location plans/ sketches for their home designs, based on the rising and setting of the sun. They will study rainwater collection systems, geo-thermal energy, and green roofs.
