Seniors Carly McGowan and Joe Canfield signed letters of intent on Tuesday, February 27. McGowan is headed to Saint Joseph's University, where she will run on the women's track team and Canfield will be a member of the Division I Lafayette College men's soccer team.
ABOUT CARLY MCGOWAN Upon her graduation from Archmere this May, McGowan will have earned 10 High School Varsity Letters in track (both outdoor and indoor) and volleyball. The senior has set seven Archmere school records in track – 100 meter, 100 meter hurdle, 4 x 100, 4 x 200, 55 meter, 55 meter hurdle and 200 meter indoor, and was named the 2011 Outdoor Track State Champion in the 4 x 200 relay with a time of 1:45:97. She was also named Outdoor Track State Champion in the 4 x 100 in 2010, with a time of 49:60 as the relay anchor.
McGowan served as the Archmere outdoor track team captain her junior & senior years, and the indoor track team captain during her senior year. She was voted the track team’s MIP and MVP in 2010 and was Archmere’s top team scorer at states in 2010 (outdoor), 2011 (indoor) and 2012 (indoor). Additionally, she has competed at the Penn Relays for the past 5 years in 4x100 relay.
McGowan was also a top athlete for Archmere in volleyball, playing on the varsity team for all 4 years. In 2011, her team finished second in the Delaware State Championships. McGowan was selected to First Team All-Conference DSAC and to Third Team Delaware All-State in volleyball in 2010 and 2011.
In addition to her outstanding athletic accomplishments, McGowan is the senior yearbook editor and earned cum laude honors this year. At Saint Joseph’s University, she plans to major in Public Relations.
ABOUT JOE CANFIELD
Archmere senior Joseph Canfield has played varsity soccer for Archmere for three years, and was named captain his senior year. He earned First Team All-Diamond State Conference and First Team All-State recognition and was named the MVP of the Delaware Senior All-Star game. He was also named MVP of Archmere’s soccer team this past season and, along with his team, made it to the semi-finals in the state tournament.
In addition to his achievements in Archmere soccer, Canfield played for the school’s varsity basketball team, and is a member of the 4-time state championship team, the Hockessin Strikers. In total, he has earned four varsity letters at Archmere.
Canfield is a member of Archmere’s chapter of the National Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society, and was awarded ninth place in the state on the National Spanish Exam. He also volunteers with Legal Services Corporation of Delaware, a non-profit legal group and coaches little league.
In addition to competing in the Patriot League as a Division I player at Lafayette, Canfield plans to major in Economics.
